A Theological Examination

St. Hilarion (Troitsky) the Hieromartyr

Never in the English language have we seen such a comprehensive patristic presentation advancing the understanding of the Bible, the Church, and history. In this book, Saint Hilarion gives an exceptional analysis of the Scriptural teachings on the Church, not only in the New Testament but also in the Old Testament. His unique insight is perhaps most exemplified with his presentation of this concept of “Churchliness,” further deepening one’s outlook of the ecclesia and stressing how universally significant and intimately particular the Church’s effect is on the human race.

In this second volume of St. Hilarion’s collected works, following On the Dogma of the Church, the reader will find the full flowering of his understanding of the Mystery of the Church. This offering completes his academic contributions during his time at the Moscow Theological Academy. Herein we find over a dozen treatises and articles on true unity, true freedom, the ecclesiology of the prophetic schools in Old Israel, authentic repentance in Orthodoxy, the place of Scripture in the life of a Christian and the life of the Church, how Saint Peter’s confession is received by the Church, the role of Christ’s Nativity for salvation, and more. Saint Hilarion’s penetrating wisdom acts as a shield protecting the faithful from the corruptions of heterodox views of the Church which impacted the Orthodox of his time and continue to do so today.
