This is the most complete biography of Elder Joseph the Hesychast. The book contains the very personal account of Elder Ephraim telling the life of his Elder Joseph the Hesychast, whose holiness made him one of the most influential monks on the Holy Mountain in the twentieth century. Many of these fascinating stories have never been published before, including delightful anecdotes about Elder Joseph’s brotherhood, moving accounts of his spiritual struggles, insightful spiritual counsels from his deep wisdom, and amazing miracles.

This was the first Orthodox biography that I read and at first I had hesitations because I come from a different Protestant culture. As soon as I started reading it, however, my reservations dissolved as I was immersed in this Saints' holiness and hard core asceticism. Serving as a testament to his holiness is the fact that he was persecuted unjustly in his life. St Paisios regretted not going to meet St Joseph as others said St Joseph had fallen into prelest. Don't make the same mistake and overlook this book! There is nothing better in this life than the Jesus Prayer and reading about those Saints who succeeded in obtaining union with God through the Prayer. Saint Joseph was certainly one. Please pray for us, Elder, that we can obtain just a tiny bit of the fervor that you had.
This book is amazing and learning about this wonderful and holy saint from elder ephraim was very good. If you want to learn about Saint Joseph and his brotherhood then this book is for you.
A beautiful, well documented book. I highly recommend it.
