Translated from the original Russian
On the Mountains of the Caucasus is a book on the theology and practice of
hesychasm and the Jesus prayer, published in 3 editions between the years of
1907 and 1912 (the present translation is the 3rd edition of 1912). It enjoyed
great popularity and was endorsed by saints, such as Elder Barsanuphius of
Optina and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth, until the beginning of the Imyaslavie
or Name-Glorifiers controversy. This work will be of interest to those who want
to learn more about the Name-Glorifiers controversy or the history of the Jesus
prayer in Russia. An essay by Metropolitan Anthony Khrapovitsky, the book’s
most ardent opponent, is included as an appendix.
This is the first time this work has been translated into the English language.
